Hi! I’m Michelle Shlafman
I'm a holistic mind-body coach and I want to help you recover from chronic pain and anxiety. YOU can "unlearn your pain" using pain science education, somatic and mindfulness practices, energy psychology, and parts work.
With mind-body coaching, you can move beyond persistent pain to increase your physical, mental, and emotional flexibility while enriching your quality of life and expanding your creative potential.
Whether you're navigating mind-body conditions on the path to a pain-free existence or facing chronic pain from serious health challenges, I'm here to offer support. My goal is to empower you to lead a fulfilling life, regardless of the stage of your journey with pain.
My coaching approach blends Pain Science Education (TMS/PPD), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), Comprehensive Energy Psychology (CEP), Usui Reiki, and Presence-Based Coaching with mindfulness, nervous system regulation, self-compassion, expressive arts, and embodiment approaches. I hold a Masters of Science degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
I've truly been in your shoes. As an ex-high-high-level competitive gymnast/ballerina with disc complications, I know how it feels to have debilitating pain. I understand the fear, anger, anxiety, and overwhelm that accompanies this discomfort.
I don't want women to go through the frustration and fear that I went through to find healing. So I made a promise to myself that once I healed I would help other women do the same.

Your discomfort began following a stressful event, possibly an injury or illness and has persisted. Despite exploring various treatments, diets, or supplements, relief remains elusive. Mind-body coaching is meant for short-term education and meditation in the TMS/mind-body approach. It's best practice to engage in psychotherapy for psychological issues, such as depression or trauma. If you are suffering from a mental health issue, it's best to seek a licensed therapist and I am happy to recommend some - or if you reside in the state where I’m licensed a therapist, I’m happy to assess if we are a good fit for therapy.

This internal stress, if not emotionally processed, can manifest physically. Research shows that children who face neglect or abuse are significantly more prone to chronic pain and other stress-related conditions in adulthood.

You can expect that we will work together, as coaching is a shared and collaborative process. I will not have the answers to all your concerns, but I do have the ability to listen carefully and ask thoughtful questions to help you consult your own inner wisdom. I may offer you skills or tools that will help you move in the direction you want. I will encourage you to make your own decisions. I will offer you respect and compassion. You get to choose what you share and when you share it. I may sometimes offer you “suggested tasks” between sessions, directing you to pay special attention to something in your life, asking you to practice specific skills, or possibly record thoughts, behaviors, or feelings. The most progress in coaching is made when you are able to apply what we discuss in sessions, in your day-to-day life.

Our first session will be about getting to know one another and establishing your goals in coaching. You can expect to share what is bringing you to therapy, some personal history, and what you are hoping to get out of coaching. I will ask questions to learn more about you and review your intake paperwork with you. Our first session is also a great opportunity for us to feel out if we are a good fit. This session is the beginning of establishing a coaching relationship, so you may pay attention to whether it feels like a space where you can feel safe and if you can see yourself trusting and opening up to me over time. I will not expect you to tell me everything at once or bear your deepest darkest secrets to me in our first session.

The financial agreement is another form you signed. The basics of what it states is that you are responsible for payment at the time of service. I keep your credit card on file so if you forget it, it’s available. If you need to cancel a session for any reason, make sure you do so more than 48 hours before your session. This gives me a chance to contact the people who may have wanted a coaching session this week but couldn’t get in. If you cancel within 48 hours or don’t show up for your appointment, you are financially responsible for the full fee of the session, which is $200. I’ll use the credit card I have on file for any no-show or late cancellation fees and will charge it during the session you’re missing. An occasional exception may be made in the case of an emergency. It’s important that we meet consistently in order to make progress.

Everyone’s circumstances are unique and the length of time coaching can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek coaching in the first place.
